The Rome side finished second behind Inter in the Serie A season and in early May lost 1-0 against them in the Italian Cup final, which gave them a place in the Supercup.
The season opener at the Giuseppe Meazza in Milan marks the debut of Rafael Benitez on the bench of the Nerazzurri after the departure of Jose Mourinho to Real Madrid.
There will also be the return of troubled Brazilian Adriano on the pitch where he played, on and off due to loan deals and alcohol problems, with Inter from 2001 to 2009.
Roma signed the powerful striker in the summer after a season at Flamengo, but coach Claudio Ranieri is likely to prefer captain Francesco Totti and Mirko Vucinic upfront when the game starts.
Ranieri hopes to have back from injury both Chile midfielder David Pizarro and Brazil goalkeeper Julio Sergio, who is to be replaced by Romanian Bogdan Lobont if he can’t play.
Absentees aside, Inter’s Argentine captain Javier Zanetti said that “against roma we will have to suffer, because the red-yellows can cause us problems in any moment, but we are ready.”
Walter Samuel, another defence mainstay from Argentina, and a former roma player, looked forward also to the European Supercup scheduled for August 27 against Atletico Madrid.
“They are two trophies that can be won,” he said. “This is our motivation. We will try to give our maximum and win a trophy already Saturday.”
Diego Milito, also from Argentina, scored the winner in the cup final and 22 goals in the league and remains Inter’s best goal source, with support from Cameroon Samuel Eto’o and Dutchman Wesley Sneijder.
Roma president Rosella Sensi said she expect strong support from the fans after a season that left the club empty handed despite a roaring second half.
Ranieri’s side were briefly ahead of Inter, who, however, clawed back the lead and closed the season with a two-point lead.
“Last year our team managed an extraordinary rally,” Sensi said. ”Today, looking at the (cup final), the (Serie A) league and the Champions League, we must give the same answers.”
The tie gives Inter a chance to draw level with AC Milan on five trophies, as they play their fifth straight Supercup.
